  • Where should I start when trying Hanfu for the first time?

Posted by Harry H. on March 1, 2025 at 12:53 pm

I’ve always admired Hanfu, but I have no idea where to start. There are so many different styles, and it’s hard to know which one would be best for a beginner. What’s the best approach to choosing my first Hanfu, and which design should I start with?

If this is your first time wearing Hanfu, it’s best to start with a more basic design to get the hang of things. Here’s a good way to start:

Start with a basic Ruqun or a single-layer robe. These styles are easy to wear, and you’ll be able to practice the steps of putting on the Hanfu without feeling overwhelmed. The Ruqun is simple but still looks elegant, and it’s a great introduction to Hanfu. Look for beginner-friendly guides or tutorials online, as they can show you step-by-step how to wear and adjust the Hanfu properly. Once you feel comfortable in simpler styles, you can slowly work your way up to more formal or complex designs.

Start simple, my friend! Grab a basic ruqun—it’s just a top and skirt, super beginner-friendly. Pick a light fabric like cotton so you’re not sweating buckets, and go for muted colors if you’re shy about standing out. Watch a quick YouTube tutorial to get the tying right, and practice at home first. You’ll feel like a pro in no time!

Uh, I’d say start with something easy—like, a two-piece set, nothing too crazy with tons of layers. I got mine online, super cheap, just to test it out. Look up how to put it on ‘cause I had no clue at first—left over right, that’s the trick! Wear it around the house ‘til you’re not tripping over yourself, haha.

If you’re diving into hanfu for the first time, go for a classic style like a qixiong ruqun—high-waisted skirt and top, very iconic! Start with a set that’s not too pricey, maybe from a reliable shop online. Study the basics of layering and tying—left crosses over right, always—and maybe get a simple hair accessory to feel the vibe. It’s a cool way to connect with the history!

Keep it low-key at first—get a basic hanfu, like a short top and long skirt combo. You can find decent ones on Taobao or wherever, nothing fancy. Figure out the sash part with a video or something, and just wear it casually at home to get comfy. No pressure, just vibe with it!
