Do you ever get tired of people asking “is that a costume?”
4 CommentsView more comments-
At first yes, now I just smile and say “It’s traditional Chinese clothing — hanfu.” Most people are curious, not rude.
-
I usually reply “Yeah kinda, but the cool historical kind” — keeps it light and opens the door for nice conversations.

What’s a good “upgrade” hanfu after your first basic set?
View more comments-
A proper Tang ruqun with good drape. Once you have the basics down, Tang feels like the next level — more dramatic but still wearable.
-
A beizi + pleated skirt combo (Song style). Very versatile: you can mix with modern pieces easily.

How do you store hanfu if you have very limited closet space?
View more comments-
Vacuum compression bags + hanging the top separately. Compress the skirts, hang the tops on slim velvet hangers. Saves insane space.
-
I use those hanging closet organizers with multiple shelves. Fold skirts loosely, stack them flat — no creases.

Which dynasty style is the most forgiving for different body types?
View more comments-
Song dynasty hands down. High waist + loose fit + vertical pleats = very flattering on almost every body shape.
-
Tang style can be great if you like curves, but the very open neckline and big sleeves can be unforgiving if you’re self-conscious about shoulders/arms.

Is it normal to feel awkward the first few times wearing hanfu outside?
View more comments-
Extremely normal. Almost everyone feels self-conscious the first 2–3 outings. After that you either get used to it or you stop caring — both are wins.
-
I used to hunch my shoulders and walk super fast. Now I just walk normally and smile. People stare way less when you act confident.

What’s the biggest beginner mistake when buying hanfu online?
View more comments-
Believing the model photos 100%. Models are usually very tall + thin + professionally lit. Real-person review pics are way more honest.
-
Not checking the actual measurements chart and just picking by height. Hanfu sizing is very inconsistent across shops.

What’s your go-to first hanfu for total beginners?
View more comments-
A basic white or light blue Song-style aoqun set. Simple, flattering on almost everyone, and not overwhelming.
-
Don’t stress about “authenticity” for your very first one. Just get something that makes you smile when you look in the mirror. The historical deep-dive can come later—first step is falling in love with wearing it.

Quick question: is it weird to wear hanfu alone at home just because it feels nice?
View more comments-
Bonus points: you get to practice all the poses for when you finally go out.
-
No shame in hanfu self-care Sundays. We all deserve to feel like ancient nobility while eating instant noodles.

Do you think hanfu is becoming too commercialized?
View more comments-
Yes and no. The cheap mass-produced stuff floods the market, but the really good artisan pieces are still expensive and rare.
-
I’m okay with fast-fashion hanfu as entry-level, most people start there and then upgrade when they get hooked.
