  • What are the most common mistakes beginners make with Hanfu?

Posted by Mark S. Lawler on March 1, 2025 at 12:48 pm

I really don’t want to mess up when wearing Hanfu for the first time, especially since I know it has a lot of cultural significance. What are some of the most common mistakes that beginners make, and how can I avoid them? Are there any basic etiquette rules or do’s and don’ts I should be aware of?

Here are some common mistakes to watch out for:

    · Choosing the wrong size: Hanfu sizing can be different from modern clothing. Always check measurements and avoid going for something that’s too tight or too loose.

    · Wearing the wrong accessories: Don’t go overboard with accessories. Too many can clash with the elegant simplicity of Hanfu.

    · Incorrect layering: Hanfu isn’t like a regular outfit where you just throw on anything. Pay attention to how the layers are meant to fit, especially around the waist and shoulders.

    · Forgetting about shoes: Hanfu often comes with traditional shoes, but if you don’t have them, make sure your shoes match the style of your Hanfu. Sneakers or casual shoes might not always go well with more formal Hanfu.

These mistakes are pretty easy to avoid once you know what to look for!

Biggest oops? Tying it right over left—total newbie move! Also, wearing too much and roasting alive.

I messed up the crossing—looked so wrong! Oh, and tripping over the skirt ‘cause I didn’t lift it.

Crossing it backward’s super common—left over right, folks! Plus, picking heavy stuff and sweating buckets.

People tie it weird or pile on layers like it’s winter. Keep it simple or you’re toast!

Flipping the sides wrong’s a classic—left over right, always! Also, overdoing accessories and looking cluttered.
