What are the basic steps to wearing Hanfu?
Posted by Brent Johnson on March 1, 2025 at 12:54 pmI’ve heard that wearing Hanfu involves multiple layers and steps, and it can be a bit tricky. Could you break down the basic steps for me, so I know how to put everything on in the right order?

Wearing Hanfu can seem complicated at first, but there are some basic steps you can follow to make it easier:
1. Start with the inner garments: Usually, there’s a basic undergarment like a long shirt or jacket. Put this on first before adding layers.
2. Add the main outfit: This could be a Ruqun or Shenyi, depending on your style. Ensure it’s aligned properly before moving on to the next steps.
3. Tie the sashes: After your main outfit is on, tie the sashes or belts at the waist. These help to hold the outfit together and define your shape.
4. Add outer layers: If your style involves outer robes, add them on top, making sure to adjust them so they sit comfortably.
5. Finish with accessories: Finally, add any accessories like hairpins, belts, or jewelry to complete the look.
Pay attention to details like the fit of each piece, the length of the sashes, and how the layers align. Once you practice a few times, the steps will feel more natural!

Okay, I was so nervous about this, but here’s what I do: start with the inner layer, usually a plain top and bottom so you’re not flashing anyone. Then the main hanfu part—cross it left over right, no exceptions, or it’s ‘wrong.’ Tie the sash around your waist, not too loose or it’ll slip, and add any outer stuff if you’re going for drama. Took me forever to not panic, but it’s pretty straightforward now!

First step’s the base layer—something light like a shirt and skirt or pants, keeps it comfy. Then the star of the show: the robe! Left over right, tie it up with the sash, and make sure it drapes nice. If you’ve got a fancy coat or shawl, layer that on last for extra flair. Play with it ‘til it feels right—hanfu’s all about that effortless beauty!
