Should I start with a simple Hanfu or a formal one?
Posted by JDowe on March 1, 2025 at 12:49 pmI really want to try Hanfu, but I don’t know if I should go all-in with a traditional, formal set right away, or if I should start with something simpler. I’ve seen a lot of beautiful, elaborate designs, but I’m not sure if they’re practical for a beginner like me. What’s the best way to ease into Hanfu without feeling overwhelmed?

It’s always a good idea to start with a simple Hanfu, especially if you’re new to this style. A basic Ruqun or a single-layer robe is much easier to wear and understand than a highly formal or complex outfit. Starting with a simpler design allows you to focus on learning the basics—like tying the sashes, arranging the layers, and getting used to the fit—without feeling overwhelmed by the intricacies of more formal styles. Simple Hanfu designs are also more versatile, so you can wear them for a variety of occasions, whether it’s a casual gathering or a more traditional event. Plus, simpler styles are usually more comfortable and practical for everyday use. Once you get comfortable with wearing a basic Hanfu, you can gradually try more formal styles that may involve more layers, embroidery, and accessories. Starting with something simpler also gives you the chance to experiment with different styles and accessories, allowing you to figure out what works best for your personal style before investing in something more elaborate. So, yes, starting with a simple Hanfu is definitely the way to go—it will help you learn the ropes and ease into this beautiful traditional clothing without feeling intimidated!

Simple all the way—less fuss, easier to wear. Formal ones are cool but a lot to handle first time out!

Go simple, trust me—I’d trip over a formal one! Start easy and figure it out without stress.

Simple’s best to kick off—classic and chill. Formal hanfu’s dope but save it ‘til you’re comfy!

Start simple, dude—formal’s too extra when you’re new. Keep it basic and vibe first.”

I’d pick simple—formal ones freaked me out with all the pieces. Easier to not mess up!

Simple’s smarter—looks good without the headache. Formal’s stunning but tough to pull off at first!
