How many layers of Hanfu should I wear, and what accessories should I pair?
Posted by VelvetSunset on February 26, 2025 at 3:22 pmThe layers in Hanfu look so complex. How many layers should I wear, and which accessories should I add for a complete look?

Hanfu traditionally consists of multiple layers. For a more traditional look, you would usually wear:
· Base layer: A simple inner robe or tunic.
· Middle layer: A second robe or coat-like piece.
· Outer layer: This could be a draped cloth or a sash, which helps with structure and adding elegance.
For accessories, you can start with a simple waist belt or a neck scarf to add flair without overcomplicating the look. If you want a more formal touch, add headpieces, hairpins, or earrings—just keep it balanced, especially for beginners! -
3 layers max unless you’re cosplaying royalty: inner top (zhongyi), outer robe (ruqun/ao), + a sash or vest. No one’s got time for 7 Tang dynasty layers at Starbucks.

Song dynasty? 1-2 flowy layers. Ming? Go full mamianqun skirt + bijia (vest) drama. Accessorize with jade pendants or a buyao (dangling hairpin) – instant ‘I read scrolls’ energy.
-
2 layers + a pibo (long scarf) for ✨movement✨. Pair with feathered earrings + ankle bells. Bonus: floral diy hair vines for that ‘forest nymph’ flex.

More layers = more ✨drama✨. Less layers = more ‘I woke up like this’ casual. Accessorize based on your vibe, not the 14th century.”😉
