Do I need to wear multiple layers or inner garments with Hanfu?
Posted by BlazeOfStars on February 26, 2025 at 3:04 pmHanfu involves so many layers. Do I really need to wear so many clothes? Do I need innerwear, corsets, or anything like that with every Hanfu?

Not every Hanfu requires a bunch of layers, but most traditional ones have at least a couple, especially if you’re going for the full historical look.
· Innerwear: In some styles, like shan or duan robes, you might wear an inner garment for comfort or modesty. For a more casual look, you can skip the inner layers.
· Corsets or wraps: Not necessary for most everyday Hanfu, but if you’re going for a formal or elaborate style (like a chángpáo), then yes, they may help with structure and maintaining the shape of the garment. But for comfort, just go with the basics.

Yes, zhongyi (inner garments) are OG Hanfu etiquette – they prevent sweat stains on fancy silk and add ✨depth✨ to collars. But if you’re not reenacting The Longest Day in Chang’an, skip ’em. Just don’t tell the Tang dynasty TikTokers I said that.

Layers? Only if you’re into ✨aesthetic✨. Throw a Hanfu robe over a basic tank top and leggings. Modern hack: wear a ribbed turtleneck under a beizi (jacket) – looks intentional, avoids nip slips.

BABE NO. Skip the zhongyi unless you wanna marinate in fabric. Opt for breathable linen Hanfu and go commando (layer-wise). Pair with bike shorts underneath if chafing’s a fear. Hydrate or diedrate.

Layers = drama. No layers = lazy. Split the difference: wear a fishnet top under a sheer shan (shirt) for ‘BDSM meets Confucius’ vibes. Accessorize with chaos.
