  • Do I have to wear a different Hanfu for each dynasty?

I’ve heard that Hanfu changed a lot from dynasty to dynasty. Does that mean each time I wear Hanfu, I need to pick a specific dynasty’s style? Or is it okay to mix and match styles from different periods? I want to wear Hanfu properly, but I’m not sure how strict these historical divisions are.

You don’t have to wear a different Hanfu for each dynasty unless you’re aiming for strict historical accuracy, like for a performance or cultural event. Many modern Hanfu enthusiasts mix elements from different dynasties for a more practical and fashionable look. That being said, if you want to be more specific, each dynasty did have its own distinctive style. For example, you might notice round collars in Ming Hanfu or flared sleeves in Tang Hanfu. It’s about finding a style that resonates with you, and there’s no rule saying you must stick to one dynasty’s style every time you wear it.

Only if you’re a history buff! Casual wear? Mix elements—nobody’s gonna arrest you for Tang skirts + Song jackets.

Dynasty police aren’t real. Unless you’re at a reenactment event, wear what makes you happy!
