  • Why does Hanfu look so layered compared to modern clothes?

One thing I’ve noticed about Hanfu is how layered and elegant it looks, while modern clothes seem much simpler. Why is that? Was there a practical or cultural reason behind all the layers, or was it just a style preference back then?

The layers in Hanfu are more than just for style—they were designed for both practical and symbolic reasons. In ancient times, layers served to protect the body from the elements and to express status—the more layers you wore, the higher your social rank was considered to be. For example, during the Tang Dynasty, higher-ranking officials would wear multiple layers, while commoners had simpler clothing. Today, these layers have become part of the aesthetic appeal of Hanfu, giving it a rich, textured look that reflects its cultural depth, in contrast to the more minimalist designs of modern clothing.
