  • What should I know about Hanfu etiquette for formal events?

Posted by Robert D. Showalter on March 2, 2025 at 1:45 pm

I’m planning to wear Hanfu to a formal event, but i suddenly realized i have no idea if there are any etiquette rules i should be following. Are there certain ways to sit, move, or interact with people that are considered more proper when wearing Hanfu?

I don’t want to do anything awkward or out of place, so if anyone has tips on Hanfu etiquette, i’d really appreciate it!

If you’re going to a more formal Hanfu event, like a traditional ceremony or cultural gathering, here’s some etiquette to keep in mind:

Dress for the occasion: For formal events, layered Hanfu with more intricate designs works best. Look for styles with detailed embroidery and use rich fabrics like brocade for a more formal look.

Move gracefully: At formal events, slow and deliberate movements are the key. Hanfu is all about elegance, so avoid rushing or making abrupt movements.

Mind your posture: Stand tall and keep your shoulders back. Hanfu has a natural grace, and your posture should match that.

Respect tradition: Don’t forget to respect the customs associated with the event, whether it’s bowing to elders or acknowledging the importance of the ceremony.

For formal events, elegance is the main theme—dress thoughtfully, move gracefully, and respect the traditions.

Minimalist Stylist: Modernized Hanfu! Try crossover designs—cropped jackets with jeans or a beizi as a chic open layer. Comfort ≠ boring.
