  • What makes each dynasty’s Hanfu unique?

I’ve seen Hanfu styles from different dynasties, and they all look pretty distinct. What are the main features that make each dynasty’s Hanfu unique? If I want to dig deeper and learn more about these differences, what are some good sources to start my research?

Each Chinese dynasty had its own distinctive fashion trends, influenced by the era’s cultural and social needs.

    · Han Dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD): Simple and modest, the Hanfu of this period focused on straight lines, creating a more practical and restrained appearance.

    · Tang Dynasty (618–907): Known for its bold, rich colors and elaborate designs, the Tang Dynasty Hanfu featured flared sleeves and wide collars, giving it a more luxurious feel.

    · Song Dynasty (960–1279): Simpler and more refined, the Song Dynasty’s Hanfu emphasized elegance and grace over grandeur, with finer fabrics and neater designs.

    · Ming Dynasty (1368–1644): The Ming Hanfu often had a round collar, and the sleeves were usually tighter, reflecting the era’s emphasis on a more structured appearance.

If you’re looking to dive into research, start with dynastic fashion books or museum collections—they often have great insights into the subtle changes from one dynasty to the next.

Silhouettes! Tang = voluminous, Song = minimalist, Ming = structured. Like iPhone updates but with more silk.

Accessory game. Han dynasty loved jade pendants; Qing went nuts for headdresses. Dynasty bling was competitive.
