One of the most common issues is the sleeves, especially the longer ones. Beginners often forget to secure them properly, which leads to dragging or them getting dirty. A simple trick is to tie or tuck them so they’re out of the way when you need them to be.
Another mistake is choosing the wrong size or fit. Hanfu isn’t a one size fits all type of clothing, so make sure to check the measurements before buying.
Also, avoid tight belts or sashes, as they can make you uncomfortable after a while. Hanfu should be flowy and relaxed!

Start with a ruqun (2-piece skirt + top) – it’s like the Hanfu equivalent of jeans-and-a-tee. No weird ties, just wrap-and-go. If it’s too big, cinch it with a flashy belt. Too small? Wear the skirt as a crop top – TikTok hacks for the win.

Song dynasty beizi (jacket) + slim pants. Looks ~historical~ but feels like pajamas. If the sleeves swallow your hands, roll ‘em up and slap on some bracelets. Instant ‘I meant to do that’ energy.

Grab a zhiduo/zhishen (loose robe) – size up for that ‘mysterious hermit’ vibe. Too long? Throw it over jeans and cuff the sleeves. Add a chunky belt to avoid looking like a potato sack.

Tang shanqun (high-waisted dress + scarf). If the chest wrap feels awkward, ditch the scarf and wear it with a cropped jacket. Too tight? Swap the traditional sash for a stretchy waistband. No Hanfu police, I promise.

Buy a cheap ao (jacket) 2 sizes too big. Cut off sleeves for a vest, knot the sides for fit. Stitch patches over stains. Congrats – you’ve just ‘Y2K-ified’ Hanfu.
