I see some Hanfu enthusiasts wearing a full set of accessories—hairpieces, necklaces, embroidered shoes, waist chains, and sometimes even a fan or a pouch. On one hand, it looks super fancy, but on the other, I feel like it might be too much? Is there such a thing as ‘too many’ accessories when wearing Hanfu? How do you know when to stop so it still looks elegant but not overdone?

Honestly, when it comes to accessories, less is definitely more. You don’t need to overload your outfit with every accessory you can find! A couple of carefully chosen pieces can make your Hanfu look super stylish without feeling cluttered. For example, a gorgeous embroidered belt or a delicate hairpin can do wonders and add just the right amount of detail.

It’s so easy to get carried away with accessories, but the key is to keep it balanced. If you’re wearing a more intricate Hanfu, go for simpler accessories. If the Hanfu itself is pretty simple, you can definitely get a little bolder with your accessories, but only in moderation. Don’t feel like you have to pile on the jewelry to look beautiful—sometimes, one standout piece is all you need. Trust me, your outfit will shine just fine without going overboard!

Depends on the drama! A festival? Go full Empress Wu. Coffee date? Maybe skip the 12 hairpins.

Rule of thumb: If you jingle when you move, you’ve gone too far.
