• How to store your Hanfu properly?

Posted by ShimmeringSea on March 2, 2025 at 1:54 pm

I have a couple of really special Hanfu pieces, and i want to make sure they stay in perfect condition. How do you store your Hanfu so that it doesn’t get damaged or lose its shape? I don’t want to end up with a wrinkled or misshapen piece. Is there a specific way you store it, like in garment bags or something else?

Proper storage is key to keeping your Hanfu in good shape. Hang it on a padded hanger to avoid damaging the fabric. If you’re storing it for a longer period, put it in a breathable garment bag to protect it from dust and light. Avoid storing it in damp or humid areas—moisture can cause mildew. If you need to fold it, make sure not to create tight creases, as they can damage the fabric. Proper storage will keep your Hanfu looking fresh.

    • Antique diancui (kingfisher feather) pieces: Toxic glue + fragile? Let a museum-restoration expert handle it.

    • Tang dynasty gold filigree? Unless you’re a medieval blacksmith, pay a jeweler to re-weld those paper-thin layers.

    • Ripped silk pibo (scarf) with historic patterns: Textile conservators can match dyes + weave. Your Sharpie won’t.

    • Vacuum-Seal? Only for cheap polyester sets you won’t cry over. Silk? Never – it needs to breathe.

    • Under-Bed Storage: Use breathable canvas bins, not plastic. Toss in lavender sachets to repel bugs + add freshness.

    • Hang Smart: Use padded hangers for robes. Clip skirts by the waistband (not the delicate hem) with skirt hangers.

    • Door Hooks: Hang lightweight beizi jackets over doors. Looks artsy, saves space.

    • Suitcase Storage: Line your luggage with cedar planks, stash hanfu inside. Perfect for renters – doubles as pest control.
