Hair accessories are such a big deal with Hanfu, right? But sometimes I’m not sure how much is too much. I want something that looks cute, but I don’t want to look like I’m overdoing it. Do you have any tips for picking something simple but still makes the whole look pop? I don’t want to look like I’m competing with my outfit, you know?

Okay, hair accessories can be tricky! If you’re new to wearing Hanfu, the first thing you should know is that less is more. You don’t want to be wearing a crown of flowers or giant pins if your Hanfu already has lots of details. A simple hairpin or even a soft silk ribbon can elevate your look without making it look too busy.

But if you’re going for something a bit more formal or the Hanfu is more minimalistic, then you can add a bit more. Think delicate flower pins or something with some subtle embroidery, but not too flashy. The idea is to add just a little touch of elegance, not to distract from the beauty of the whole outfit. Hair accessories should be like the cherry on top—not the whole sundae.

Less is more. A single jade hairpin or floral clip > a crown fit for an empress. Unless it’s a wedding—then go hard.

Match metals to your outfit’s accents. Silver hairpins with cool-toned Hanfu, gold for warm hues. Easy peasy.
