Do you pick the Hanfu first or the accessories?
I always struggle when putting a Hanfu outfit together—should I start with the clothing and then find accessories to match, or do you ever find an accessory you love first and then build the whole outfit around it? Sometimes I’ll see a really pretty hairpin or belt and want to wear it, but then I feel like I have nothing that goes with it. How do you guys approach this? What usually works best?

It honestly depends on how I’m feeling that day! Most of the time, I’ll start with the Hanfu because it sets the whole vibe for what I’m going for. Once I pick out the Hanfu, I get a sense of what kind of accessories would go well with it. For example, if I’ve chosen something really vibrant or detailed, I’ll tone down the accessories a bit so they don’t compete with the outfit.
But sometimes, if I’m super excited about a specific accessory, like a unique belt or an amazing hairpin, I’ll pick that first and then build my Hanfu around it. I think the accessories should feel like they fit with the overall vibe, not the other way around. Either way, you’ll end up with something that feels balanced and looks great. There’s no hard rule, it’s all about what mood you’re in that day!
