  • Are There Specific Etiquette Rules to Follow When Wearing Hanfu?

Posted by MoonlitSerenity on February 27, 2025 at 5:55 am

Wearing Hanfu isn’t just about putting on a traditional outfit—it seems to come with a lot of cultural and social responsibilities. When wearing Hanfu, are there any specific etiquette or behavior rules that I should follow? For example, are there traditional ways of bowing or greeting others while wearing Hanfu, or do certain occasions demand specific gestures or body postures, like how one should sit, stand, or walk? If I attend a formal gathering or cultural event in Hanfu, should I pay attention to the way I conduct myself to make sure I’m following proper cultural norms, or is it mostly about wearing the right garment?

Wearing Hanfu isn’t just about looking good—it also comes with a set of behaviors and etiquettes that reflect Chinese culture.

    Posture and Behavior:

    • Respectful Gestures: In traditional settings, you might greet others with a bow or a slight nod of the head. This shows respect and acknowledges the cultural norms around formal behavior in Hanfu.
    • Sitting and Standing: How you sit and stand is also important. Men typically sit with one leg bent to the side, while women tend to sit with their legs tucked under in a more elegant pose. The key is to maintain grace and dignity, whether you’re sitting or standing.
    • Formal Events: When you attend formal events in Hanfu, it’s not just about the clothing itself—it’s about how you carry yourself. Standing tall, keeping a calm expression, and maintaining a composed posture shows that you understand the cultural importance of Hanfu and its etiquette.

Not strict, but right-over-left collar’s a must—left-over-right’s for funerals. Sit neat, don’t slouch—keeps the vibe classy!

Maybe don’t flash too much skin? And keep the sash tied nice—feels respectful that way.
